How to Answer 6-Mark Questions in GCSE Physics (AQA)

Six-mark questions are where a lot of GCSE Physics grades are won or lost. They test whether you can link ideas together, not just recall a single fact — and that's exactly why they feel harder than the rest of the paper. The good news: once you understand how examiners actually award the marks, you can answer them to a method every single time.

What the examiner is really marking

A 6-mark question is marked on two things at once:

  1. The physics — are your points correct, relevant, and detailed?
  2. The structure — is your answer a clear, logical line of reasoning rather than a scattered list of facts?

You don't need six separate facts. You need a small number of correct points that connect to each other and answer the actual question asked.

The 5-step method

Use the same routine on every extended-response question:

  1. Underline the command word — "explain", "describe", "compare", "evaluate". It tells you what kind of answer earns marks (see below).
  2. Underline the topic and any data given in the question.
  3. Jot 3–4 key points in the margin before you write a sentence.
  4. Write in linked sentences — each point should lead to the next with words like because, therefore, which means, as a result.
  5. Check it answers the question — not just everything you know about the topic.

Command words decide your approach

Exam tip: "Explain" questions are the most common 6-markers in AQA Physics, and the most common way to lose marks is describing what happens without ever saying why.

A worked example

Question: A kettle is switched on. Explain the energy transfers that take place as the water heats up. (6 marks)

A weak answer lists facts: "Electrical energy goes in. The water gets hot. Some energy is wasted." That's three vague points and no linking — maybe 2 marks.

A full-mark answer links the physics together:

The kettle transfers energy electrically from the mains to the heating element. This raises the thermal energy store of the element, which then transfers energy to the water by heating (conduction). As a result the water's thermal energy store increases and its temperature rises. Some energy is also transferred to the surroundings by heating the kettle body and the air, so not all the input energy usefully heats the water — this is why the kettle is less than 100% efficient.

Notice every sentence connects to the next, and each step names the correct physics (energy stores, transfer by heating, efficiency).

Practise the method, not just the facts

The fastest way to improve on 6-markers is to write full answers under timed conditions and mark them against the official scheme. Pick a topic and drill the extended-response questions until the 5-step routine is automatic.
