Unit 7 · Ecology

Biodiversity & Human Impact

3 min read · part of the full Exam Guide

Biodiversity

  • Biodiversity is the variety of all the different species of organisms on Earth, or within an ecosystem
  • High biodiversity gives stability: it reduces the dependence of one species on another for food, shelter and maintaining the physical environment, so the loss of one species does less damage
  • The future of humans depends on maintaining biodiversity. Many human activities reduce it, and only recently have measures been taken to stop the reduction
